How to choose a Pilates reformer for your studio
A reformer is usually the single biggest equipment purchase a studio makes, and it is the one clients judge you on. Buy well and it will run for a decade. Buy badly and you will hear the carriage rattle before the first year is out.
This guide is written for studio owners, distributors and online sellers who are sourcing from China. It skips the marketing language and focuses on the nine things that actually change what you pay and what you get.
1. Start with how it will actually be used
Equipment for a busy studio running six classes a day is a different machine from one that lives in a client's spare room. Before comparing models, be clear on three things:
- Usage intensity — under 5 hours a week, or 30+ hours a week in a commercial timetable?
- User profile — general fitness clients, rehabilitation work, or classical training?
- Instructor preference — some teachers are trained on specific resistance feels and will not be happy with anything else.
Tell your supplier this before asking for a price. It changes the frame, the springs and the upholstery recommendation, and it is the fastest way to filter out suppliers who only want to quote you a number.
2. Frame material: aluminium or maple
This is the decision that most affects price, weight, and how the machine feels over time.

If your market is somewhere humid — Southeast Asia, coastal Australia, the Gulf — aluminium will save you complaints about warping. If your clients are classical purists, wood is part of the experience.
3. The spring system and resistance range
Most commercial reformers use a five-spring setup. What matters is not the number but the quality of the steel and the consistency of the resistance. Cheap springs lose tension unevenly, which makes the carriage feel different on the left and right side — instructors notice this immediately.
Ask for the spring specification: wire diameter, material grade, and tested cycle life. A serious supplier will have this on a spec sheet. If the answer is "same as everyone else", that is your answer.
4. Carriage ride: the part that gets ignored
The difference between a reformer that feels premium and one that feels cheap is usually the carriage. Two things control it:
- Wheel and bearing quality — sealed bearings with polyurethane wheels run quiet and stay quiet. Unsealed bearings start squeaking within months in a busy studio.
- Rail tolerance — the carriage should glide without lateral play. Push it side to side; if it rocks, the rail tolerance is loose.
This is also the component most likely to be downgraded to hit a price point, because buyers rarely test it from a photo. Ask for a video of the carriage being pushed along the full rail before you order.
5. Upholstery and cleaning
Commercial vinyl should be at least 1 mm thick, with a marine or medical grade rating if you can get it. Studios clean equipment constantly, and thin upholstery cracks at the seams first. Check:
- Seam construction on the carriage and footbar
- Foam density — low density foam flattens within a year
- Whether replacement upholstery covers are available as spare parts
6. Dimensions: measure your room, not just the machine
A standard reformer is roughly 2.3-2.5 m long. Studios regularly forget two things:
- Ceiling height — matters for Cadillacs and towers, usually 2.6 m minimum.
- Working clearance — you need space around each machine for instructors to move and correct clients, not just the footprint.
If you are fitting out a new space, send your floor plan to the supplier. Most will lay it out for you at no cost, and it avoids the classic mistake of ordering ten machines for a room that fits seven.
7. Certifications and safety documentation
For most markets, a CE declaration and material test reports (REACH, CA65 or PAHS depending on destination) are what importers and insurers ask for. Requirements differ by country, so confirm what your market needs before production rather than after the container ships — retrofitting documentation is painful and slow.
8. Budget: think in landed cost, not unit price
A factory price of USD 400 and a factory price of USD 520 can end up nearly identical by the time the goods reach your door. What separates them:
- Freight — packed volume matters more than weight for equipment
- Duty — HS codes differ by market and can swing your margin several points
- Assembly — flat-pack saves freight but costs you labour
- Spare parts — springs and straps will need replacing; know the cost up front
Rule of thumb: always ask for the packed carton dimensions and how many units fit in a 20GP and a 40HQ. If a supplier cannot answer that immediately, they have not shipped this product in volume.
9. Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
- Can I see a spec sheet with frame material, spring specification and upholstery grade?
- Can you send a video of the carriage running the full rail?
- What is the actual production lead time, and what happens if it slips?
- What is the warranty on the frame versus on wear parts?
- Is pre-shipment inspection included, and to what standard?
- Can you supply spare parts separately after delivery?
- Can we mix models in one container?
A supplier who answers all seven clearly, in writing, is worth more than one who is USD 30 cheaper.
